I Miss My Friends

I am 44 years old.  I’ve been out of high school now 27 years.  I graduated in 1986.
Why is this important? It will be when you are done reading.
At dinner with my daughter Tuesday night, she was going over her school schedule with me for the year.  She started high school last week and as she is telling me her classes, she is also saying what friends of hers are in the class.
She was beaming as she spoke about her friends.  I was smiling.  She asked me why.
‘Because honey, these next 4 years, you will look back as you get older, as some of the best times of your life.  You will life and you will cry.  Embrace and enjoy every second of it.’
Then it hit me.
I miss my friends.  From high school.
I miss those 4 years.  I had no clue how special they would be.
I know, I know, we have all grown up, had kids, have families and done some incredible things. And some incredibly dumb things too.  All of us. And, we have great friends we have met along the way.  And I absolutely love my life now.
But I miss my friends. From high school.
I still talk to quite a few of them, but not as much as I should.
We had no clue about life.  Zero.
We were black and white.  We were boy and girl.  We were rich and poor.
Didn’t matter.  Why?  Cause we were all friends.
We had no worries.  All we owned were our dreams.  We basically all had the same problems.
I miss my friends.
Some have passed on, some I haven’t spoken to in 27 years and some I talk to all the time.
A friend recently posted this pic on Facebook of our high school football team back in 1984.

I sat and stared at this pic for an hour.  Memories.  All good.
I am lucky.  I had a blast in high school.  It was incredible.
Those guys in that picture, are part of my DNA.
And I miss those guys.
I guess it comes down to this.
Now I see what I didn’t know in my daughter’s eyes… knowing I can’t explain it to her so she can know now… and just hope that she takes away good memories, and will miss her friends someday, too.
And that everything will be OK.
From the song, Life Happened.  This summed it up for me.
I saw the rest of my old friends
At our reunion at the Holiday Inn
And it seemed like it was only yesterday
Standing in the gym in our cap and gown
Full of wanderlust and glory bound
We set out to chase our dreams on wings of passion
But somewhere along the way we got distracted
Life happened
Our clothes went out of fashion with our songs
We started families and bought SUV’s
Became step-dads and soccer-moms
I finally realized we turned out alright
And we spent the night just catching up and dancing
And life happened
