Thank God For The Journey

I have written about our unique journey that God has set before us several times here.  Some of the roads are bumpy, some of the roads are clear and some of the roads we go down when we shouldn’t are filled with both.  Regardless, our journey is something to behold.

I graduated from what I think is the greatest high school in the world, McGavock, back in 1986.  We just had the best time and for many of us back then, had there been social media I would probably still be grounded.  I remember when I graduated my mother told me, “Some of your classmates, you will never forget, but some you will never see again, so enjoy the moments.”

Goodness, was she correct about that.  Then again, she was correct about just about everything.

Social media does get it’s share of disdain and rightfully so, but other times, it is a magnificent thing.  Recently, had the pleasure of doing my radio show in Orange Beach in late September.  During the show, I got a message on Facebook from a dear friend who had not seen in more than 40 years.  It took me about thirty minutes to reply because I thought I was dreaming.

Brian “Sport” Johnson, a name I had uttered in the past with the following—“What ever happened to Sport?”  He had gotten word we were there and he and his lovely wife stopped by to say hi.  We immediately caught up as if we had not missed a day in all these years.  Cancer has tried to take him several times but his spirit kicked cancer’s tail.  He has had some ups; he has had some downs but he is still here.  His road, like ours, bumpy, smooth, both at the same time and still going.

The absolute joy in my heart in seeing this guy who I grew up with was incredible.  The stories we shared, the journey we shared and just seeing his face was absolute therapy.

This journey, this amazing journey we are all on is something special if we decide to look at it through glasses that give us gratitude.  I have yet to meet a soul who has had a perfect journey.  I have meet people who are just the way we are, imperfect and beautiful.  I went to bed that night thanking God for some amazing people he has placed in my way.

The best part?  It is far from over.
