“Let Me Ask You This?”

I am guilty of it, you are guilty of it and I guess, we are all guilty of it.  Not sure why it is always our first default but it is there.  We immediately say this when we get the chance and I believe it can dampen what we are talking about.

Recently, a friend of mine was up for a big promotion and was unsure about taking it.  I asked why and he said it is a lot more responsibility and I am not sure if this is the job I want and on and on. He said it is a huge bump in pay and was just questioning a lot of it. Y’all know my stance on suffering imagined troubles when we don’t have to.

I asked him a simple question and I watched his whole demeanor change.  “Let me ask you this—What if this turns out better than you could possibly imagine?”  He just stared at me and I repeated it again.  “What if this turns out to be better than you could possibly imagine?”  He just looked at me and knew he had no come back.  “I mean this job is a lot more responsibility for what I am doing and,” I cut him off.  “Tell me, what if this job is so much better and incredible than you imagined?”

It is so easy to immediately go to the negative because we are all, as I said at the beginning, guilty of it.  Our default is to go negative and worst case scenario.  Again, the same amount of energy to worry non-stop can be used in a positive manner.  Why can’t this be a great thing that is about to happen?  I always say this phrase—Always believe that something wonderful is about to happen.

So much is mental in our world of thinking and when we search for the positive and the gratitude that how we do things can change in such a great way.  You know how I know?  I was that guy.  Always negative, always expecting the worst and never thinking anything good was going to happen.  It is sad because I was 100% correct.  I never had one positive thing to say or do or think about it and guess what, nothing good ever came my way.

I realized that the same energy, as I said earlier, can be used for positive or negative and after a nice long talk with God, we decided to only go positive.  Now this does not mean bad things don’t happen, or one doesn’t get that promotion or whatever, it only means we close that door and go after the next one.  That next one will come and when it does, the gratitude just flows and you will thank God.

Next time you entertain that negative thought or a friend has extreme consternation over something ahead, simply say, “Let me ask–What if this turns about to be better than you possibly imagined?”
