Recently, I had to go to Chattanooga for a few days where I had the great pleasure of calling some high school state football championships on T.V. It is always a great experience and the city and the production crew and the TSSAA are always first class and fun to work with.
The hotel where we stay is one the cleanest and nicest ones I have ever stayed in and again, everything is first class and done so well. We need to, however, talk about one thing that goes on at hotels every single morning and it is a sight to see. It is almost straight out of the T.V. series, The Walking Dead.
The continental breakfast and the guests who converge on said breakfast. Oh my goodness.
You can be in Paris, France, or New York City or Chattanooga, it is all the same. The same people and the same look and a free breakfast makes people lose their mind.
“Can you bring out eggs that are fresh?” They were.
“Any chance I can talk to the chef about how I want my eggs cooked?” No, they are just fine as is.
“Do you have an Espresso machine?” No, this isn’t Starbucks, it is a free hotel breakfast.
“Do you have vegan options?” See response above.
“Are waffles and pancakes the same?” Are gold and silver the same?
“Is the apple juice squeezed or does it come out of the machine as is? I am not sure how to answer this one.
As I sat at the closest table to the food, I heard all of this in a three day span and the staff at the hotel was so genuine and nice in their attitude and approach.
“Do you have any almond milk to go with the cereal?” No ma’am, this isn’t Whole Foods.
There was also a high school band staying at the same hotel that had at least 700 members, or so it seemed. They were fine because as we all know, kids will eat any and everything. These kids were doing just that and the food had to be refilled time and time again. The adults were providing all the entertainment. You ever go to the county fair and they have the bumper cars and it is a wonderfully chaotic? This is the human version of that.
They ran out of oatmeal after awhile and one adult said, “Will you be running to the store to get anymore soon?” Sir, it is a hotel, not Publix.
It did make my heart feel well though, because as I said above, we have many differences as people, but when it comes to breakfast, free breakfast, we are all the same, no matter how much money we have.
