I have written before on here about me trying to break into the world of television and having a dream of being a sports anchor. I graduated college, had what I thought was a decent resume reel and would be hired in no time. In fact, I was so out of it that I thought I would have several news stations come to me once I got my tape out there.
Now this was long before YouTube so you would go online, find a T.V. station that was looking for a sports anchor and fire off your resume tape, in the mail. Yes, in the mail and it was the quickest and best way to do it.
Sent one tape out. Then two, then three, then eight, then twenty. Crickets. Then we got up to thirty, and forty, and still crickets. In fact, I think crickets were laughing at me, too, because after awhile it was silence. I finally got a job on-air but not as a sports anchor, at channel 2 in Nashville, doing the Big Joe On The Go features around town and that was a lot of fun, and a blessing. I will write another story on why unanswered prayers are sometimes the best prayers. I ended up sending out over fifty resume tapes and got nothing back.
I actually based my first book, ‘Create The Chaos,’ on the challenges of breaking into a career that you loved and doing things above and beyond if you truly want it to happen. I learned a lot from those No’s, but if you can learn from anything to push you forward, then that is fantastic.
Then I came across this interview with Tyler Perry. He said he struggled and struggled and struggled to break into the entertainment field. Nothing was happening for him, but he kept on going and going. Still nothing was happening and then one day, he got his break and he took it and ran with it and now, he is a major entertainment force and by all accounts, still very humble. Here is what he said that got me, “I got a million no’s but all I needed, was that one yes from God. Just that one yes and I knew it was coming when the time was right, and I got it.”
Powerful. Just absolutely powerful. All he needed was one yes from God and off he went. Off we can go as well if we just keep pushing forward, just keep believing, and just keep praying. It really is that simple, just one yes from God.
The best part is that it will happen when you least expect it and because you have that faith, have that drive, have that belief in yourself, it makes it all that much sweeter.
So if you are still going and fighting and getting told no, remember, it only takes one yes from God.
