I wrote a while ago that during the pandemic, I was bored and came across an old guitar. It was not in tune and about to fall apart but it did work. I had always wanted to learn how to play guitar but never found the time or the motivation. Suddenly, I had both and a lot.
I sat down, hopped on YouTube and found easy songs to play and away I went. Four years later, I can play about 25 songs decently and many more I can almost get them, but I remain very much a work in progress.
It is nothing more than a hobby that I completely love doing. I write this because I saw recently that a cooking school and their classes are all sold out because people wanted to learn how to cook. Now that can also be considered a hobby because they are not looking to open a restaurant but to have some fun and who knows what can happen.
So I started looking around and I had no idea how many people are involved in some sort of hobby. I love this. I had some inkling that people dabbled here and there in things, but when you start talking to more and more of your friends, you realize that everyone should do this.
Then I read about the five hobby rule and was blown away. Five hobbies that you love: One to make money, one to keep you in shape, one to be creative, one to build knowledge, and one to evolve your mindset. I am not sure I can handle five hobbies but this is certainly a goal.
Back to asking people if they have any hobbies and they talk about photography, biking, kayaking, painting, rock climbing and even birdwatching. Fascinating. All of them and I am sure there are many, many more. Who knew and now I do. A busy mind, a busy body, I think, is an absolutely beautiful thing.
I had no idea that canning was a hobby, much less a word, but evidently a bunch of y’all do that and now I am reading about it. I guess anything can be a hobby as long as you are passionate about it. Even had a friend who took up flying and now that is his hobby that he says just keeps him going because it is something he had always wanted to do.
As we have said before, you will never find the perfect time to do anything, so just go ahead and do it.
