Just Don’t Ask…..

Before summer kisses us goodbye, I have gone to the beach with my 15 year old daughter to spend a few days with her before school starts and life gets crazy again.
We took a beach trip a few years ago when she was 12 but now that she is 15, it is night and day.
I am talking Beta to VHS.  Analog to digital.  Leno to Fallon.
Major difference.  Even in just 3 years.
I have written before about taking her school shopping and the adventure it was for me.
Here though, things I have learned by going to the beach with my 15 year old daughter.
************************************************************************
TIME IS IRRELEVANT

Looking up the word “irrelevant,’ one of the synonyms is inapplicable.  And time certainly does not apply to a 15 year old girl.
15 minutes means 30.  30 means 45.  And so on.
This guys, is where it starts.  Where you get on their time and you will never get off of it.
“Honey, let’s leave at 7 to go eat.  OK?’
Checks watch, it is 7:45.  And you’re OK with it.  Kinda.

BATHROOM HAS BECOME A REFUGEE CAMP

This is certainly no shocker, right dads?  But at the beach, it seems some alien has taken over my daughter and her bathroom prowess.
Stuff everywhere.  It looks like there are 33 people in the room.
And this is my favorite.
She can’t find anything.  Nothing.  Even though, everything, I mean everything, is in there.

SLEEP IS NOT IMPORTANT, YET DON’T TRY TO WAKE HER

“I want to get up at 7 and be at the beach by 8 every single day.  So wake me up at 7, OK daddy?”
Oh Lord, I have heard this practically all her life.
Trying to wake your kids up for anything is a chore.  You would think being at the beach, it would provide the motivation to get up and get going.
Wrong.
This is the reaction I get when I try to wake her up early.

MAKE-UP IS VERY IMPORTANT, EVEN AT THE BEACH

I made the mistake of asking my daughter of why are you wearing make-up to the beach.
Eerie silence.
Eerie.
Apparently, most girls do and this is non-negotiable.
So when I see the girls at the pools back in Nashville, I know why.
Cause, why not.

In summing it all up, I have learned this.
Just don’t ask.
Just simply don’t ask.
